Citing research reports, British media The Telegraph and Daily Mail reported that every extra inch of fat around a person's waist can increase their risk of heart attack by 10 percent.

Oxford University researchers published this report after conducting research on more than 430,000 British citizens for 13 years at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Barcelona.

According to the report, the average age of the study participants was 56 years and 8,669 of them had suffered a heart attack.  Many of whom were in critical condition.

Studies have shown that people with a waist size of 41 inches have a 40 percent higher risk of heart attack or related diseases than people with a waist size of 37 inches.

According to researchers, people with large or thick waistlines are more likely to develop heart problems than those who are overweight.

The main researcher of this study confirmed the matter.  According to Dr Ayodipupo Ogunted, 'trunk fat' or waist fat is one of the leading indicators of a person developing heart disease.

He said, 'People who have excess fat around the waist are 3.21 times more likely to have a heart attack than people who are overweight.  And the risk of heart attack in the next category is 2.65 times higher.

According to scientists, a large waistline is a sign of excess visceral (internal) fat.  When excess fat accumulates around the abdomen and obstructs blood flow in the blood vessels, it affects the functioning of the heart.
